The “Accelerating towards 2030: Workforce Transformation for Better Health” will serve as a mid-point landmark event, designed to review advances in the pharmacy workforce development since our 2016 Nanjing conference.  We aim to lay out a refreshed and revised FIP roadmap for the journey towards 2030. You may recall that the Nanjing outcomes in 2016 included the Pharmaceutical Workforce Development Goals, the Nanjing Statements on pharmacy education and our global vision for education and workforce.  These significant outputs motivated FIP to develop a unique workforce development strategy, a collaborative effort steered by the FIP Hub, GPO, FIPEd and the FIP Boards and Sections. This strategy aligned with the Astana Declaration’s emphasis on strengthening primary health care provision and universal health coverage. 

Over the past few years, FIP has consistently showcased its initiatives in pharmacy workforce development. However, as we approach 2024, it will be almost eight years since we convened for a dedicated leadership event in pharmacy workforce development. The continually changing landscape of health care, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores an urgent need for revision and refreshment of our strategic goals. This need was strongly reinforced at the Fifth WHO Global Forum on Human Resources for Health in April 2023.

This symposium, will serve as a critical mid-term review to evaluate our achievements and revise our strategic directions. Drawing inspiration from the format of the Nanjing Symposium, this symposium is geared towards engaging with our members and generating actionable outcomes to continue to guide our future initiatives.

What do the sessions entail?
The agenda features a rich blend of current updates, panel discussions, and hands-on policy workshops. Working groups will pinpoint existing workforce-related gaps and formulate policy action plans to bridge these gaps. Participants will engage in:

• In-depth examination of WHO Drivers and the ongoing FIP development initiatives;
• Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and the implications drawn from the WHA 76 Resolutions;
• Highlighting the FIP evidence-based contributions to the field;
• Collective brainstorming to set workforce development priorities as we journey toward 2030.

By combining these elements, the symposium is designed to produce both reflective insights and tangible outputs, ensuring a future-oriented approach to workforce development in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.
